About the Film

Set in 1999 Hawaiʻi, Tatsuo “Tats” Kaneshiro is a WWII veteran and member of the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the all-Nisei unit that became the most decorated in U.S. military history. Now living quietly with his daughter, Lynn, and grandson Ryan, Tats fills his days with gardening, television, and chess with an old army friend. But beneath the calm of his retirement lies a painful secret from the war that still haunts him. Inspired by the real experiences of many 442 veterans who never shared their stories, Shikata Ga Nai reveals the silent battles these aging heroes have carried alone for decades.
