Bon Dance — rooted in the Japanese Buddhist tradition of Obon — is one of Hawaiʻi's most beloved summer celebrations. Brought to the islands by early Japanese immigrants, Obon honors the spirits of ancestors through communal dance, music, and gathering. Each summer, temples and missions across Oʻahu, the Big Island, Kauaʻi, Maui, Lānaʻi, and Molokaʻi open their grounds to welcome dancers and community members of all backgrounds.
